Etymology and history

The name of Iolite stone come from Greek word ios, wich means violet. One of The Vikings explorer Leif Eriksson and the other legendary Viking explorers ventured far into the Atlantic, away from any coastline that could help them determine position, they relied on iolite to help them determine their location. Iolite is also very often mistaken for Tanzanite

Iolite description

Iolite is usually a purplish blue when cut properly, with softness to the color that can be quite attractive. The gemstone of Iolite is a popular and interesting stone, and is the gem variety of the mineral cordierite. It has a delicate and quite pretty violet blue color that is unlike other gemstones, although it has been compared to a light blue sapphire. It is this reason that it is sometimes known as "water sapphire". Although the color is attractive and popular, iolite is not extremely rare and is therefore affordable. Iolite is not Tanzanite though in certain shades of colors, the gemstone could closely resemble Tanzanite. As a gemstone, Iolite is more durable than Tanzanite but is priced much lower as compared to Tanzanite. There is another interesting fact that relates to the price of Iolite and Tanzanite gemstones. Tanzanite was introduced in gemstone markets with a great amount of publicity; it was also referred to as the gemstone find of the century.
