Iolite, also called as Cordierite in mineralogy, was discovered in 1813, by French geologist Louis Cordier (hence the second name), and is often associated with similar minerals, such as garnet. It usually occurs in other kinds of stones, such as in granite, pegmatite or norite, and is a very popular gemstone since it was first discovered. The name itself is a huge hint to its primary color, as Iolite is named after "Violet", the tone between blue and purple it usually occurs in. It has strong pleochroism, which means that when observed in different angles, it can change its color substantially.
It is not only a beautiful stone, but is also a useful one, the Vikings used it for centuries to determine the direction of the sun when the weather was cloudy (as the stone would be the brightest when the polarization is the highest, meaning that it is exactly between the sun and the beholder, even if there are clouds inbetween).
It is also believed to have positive effects on the mind and body in many different areas. First of all, it is believed to have an inspiring effect, enhancing creativity, while they say it can also help to ameliorate vision, both literally and in a metaphysical sense. Our designers try to create our Iolite earrings in a way that they represent these positive effects, while they also put emphasis on designing truly magnificent pieces of jewelry that are fit to be worn for any occasion, that are subtle but stunning. This also makes them beautiful birthday gifts, especially for teenagers and young adults still trying to find their place in this world.
