Many of us have fond memories of the seaside vacations we took with our families when we were children. As a souvenir of the trip, to keep some happy memories, it can be quite common to take something home that you found on the beach, something like a beautiful stone or shell, and some of us might even remember trying to make a small incision in the shell and then threading a piece of string through the hole in order to make a necklace. There's no reason why adulthood needs to mean the end of ocean inspired jewelry, although we might not be inclined to make it ourselves. Shell shape earrings look great- they're stylish and yet still playful.
While there are many variations of style when it comes to shell shape earrings, the most popular and historically significant is, without a doubt, the scallop shell style. Scallop shell earrings have their roots in the time of the Spanish empire, when the Spanish were busy setting up colonies in many parts of the newly discovered world, and is attributed as a symbol of St. James, and scallop shells were worn as decoration and adornment in the belief that they would protect the wearer from harm and evil.
Sea shell and ocean themed earrings were also popular amongst women who grew up in the 1980's and this is perhaps largely due to the massive popularity of the 1989 Walt Disney film version of The Little Mermaid, based upon the classic 1836 story by the Danish writer Hans Christian Anderson. The title character wore several seashell pieces of jewelry and clothing, and many little girls wanted to emulate their heroine.
Whether you want to remember the ocean vacations of childhood or simply to look great, then you really should consider adding some shell shape earrings to your collection.
