Look for one of three hallmarks: 925<\/strong>, Sterling<\/strong>, or Ster<\/strong>. European pieces sometimes carry a lion passant or a millesimal fineness mark. If a necklace has no stamp at all and the seller can’t explain why, treat that as a warning.<\/p>\n

Quick At-Home Checks<\/h3>\n

Sterling is nonmagnetic, so a strong neodymium magnet should not pull on the chain. A soft white cloth rubbed along the chain will pick up a faint gray-black smudge from oxidized silver, which plated pieces won’t produce once the coating is compromised. Neither test is lab-grade, but together they rule out most obvious fakes.<\/p>\n

Larimar<\/h3>\n

Mined only in the Barahona province of the Dominican Republic. Larimar<\/a> is a blue variety of pectolite, Mohs 4.5\u20135, with color that ranges from pale sky to deep volcanic blue depending on copper content.<\/p>\n

Amethyst and Citrine<\/h3>\n

Chain choice affects both durability and how a pendant sits. A few guidelines from two decades of shipping necklaces:<\/p>\n
