Jasper

Etymology and history

The name of Jasper means "spotted or speckled stone", and is derived via Old French jaspre (variant of Anglo-Norman jaspe) and Latin iaspidem (nom. iaspis)) from Greek ἴασπις iaspis, (feminine noun) from a Semitic language (cf. Hebrew ישפה yashepheh, Akkadian ܗ yashupu), ultimately from Persian یشپ yašp Early history claims that jasper in different forms was used for multiple chores. Medicinal properties of jasper were recognized much early in the history and people used to wear it for multiple health benefits. Through out history, the stone Jasper has been famous as the “Supreme Nurturer”. This stone has been used and revered by people world over.

Jasper is an opaque rock of virtually any color stemming from the mineral content of the original sediments or ash. Patterns arise during the consolidation process forming flow and depositional patterns in the original silica rich sediment or volcanic ash. Hydrothermal circulation is generally thought to be required in the formation of jasper. Jasper is an opaque form of chalcedony that occurs in multiple colors, It is finely grained variety of the silica mineral chert. A number of patterns are formed on the jasper stone during the consolidation of the sediments. Jasper stone is usually made by the process of hydrothermal circulation. Jasper has a dull luster but takes a fine polish. It completely resembles to quartz in hardness and other physical properties. It is a dark green, semi-translucent, opaque form of stone. Jasper stone owes its color to admixed hematite, but when it occurs with clay admixed, the color is a yellowish white or gray, or with goethite, a brown or yellow.
