Patterns arise during the consolidation process forming flow and depositional patterns in the original silica rich sediment or volcanic ash. Hydrothermal circulation is generally thought to be required in the formation of jasper. Jasper is an opaque form of chalcedony that occurs in multiple colors, It is finely grained variety of the silica mineral chert. A number of patterns are formed on the jasper stone during the consolidation of the sediments. Jasper stone is usually made by the process of hydrothermal circulation.
