Unakite

Etymology and history

Unakite, sometimes spelled unikite is named after the Unakas Mountains of North Carolina in the United States on the borders of North Carolina and Tennessee in the Southeastern United States, where it was first discovered.

Unakite description

Unakite is altered granite composed of pink orthoclase feldspar, green epidote, and generally clear quartz. It exists in various shades of green and pink and is typically mottled in appearance. In good quality, unakite is considered a semiprecious stone. It is also referred to as epidotized granite. Unakite is granite and is formed from the mixture of pink feldspar, quartz and green epidote. It is very compact and hard gemstone which makes it a stone suitable for jewelry. The stone is an olive green colored opaque structure and is also available in shades of green. The specific gravity of the gemstone is 2.6-2.7. The hardness is 6-7 on Mohs scale and is perfect for any jewelry design. Unakite, often referred as epidotized granite, consists of a salmon-pink feldspar, green epidote, and quartz. The stone is an opaque coral and olive-green. Sometimes, other shades of green are also seen. Often referred as epidotized granite, consists of a salmon-pink feldspar, green epidote, and quartz.
