Larimar is a type of pectolite. This is an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. Pectolite is far more common than larimar and can be found in many locations but the unique volcanic blue coloration present in larimar is only found in the Dominican Republic.
The larimar was created when Miocene volcanic rocks and basalts erupted within the limestone on the south coast of the Dominican Republic. The rocks contained cavities or vugs which were later filled with various minerals including the larimar or blue pectolite as it is also known.
When these rocks eroded the larimar was carried down the slope and ended up in beach gravels and alluvium. The pectolite-bearing sediments were then carried down the Bahoruco River to the sea and it is the tumbling action of the sea which gives blue larimar its polished finish. The first few stones were found in the alluvial sediment which led to the upstream search and later the formation of Los Chupaderos mine.
The most significant source of larimar is at Los Chupaderos Southwest of Barahona in the Dominican Republic. There are now approximately 2,000 mine shifts perforating the mountain side as people endeavor to search for this amazing stone. The mine shafts are vertical and are surrounded by the indigenous rainforest vegetation, making this seem an even more exotic gemstone.
The quality grading of larimar is based on the coloration and the intensity of color. Apart from its famous blue color it is also available in green and even with brown stripes or red spots. The green, brown or red colors are due to either the presence of other minerals or pigmentation. Most larimar pendants are set in silver but some of the high-grade larimar is set in gold. The brighter the blue color the more expensive the stones.
Be careful not to expose your larimar pendant to excess light or heat though as the blue color is photosensitive and can be damaged by them. It is also not recommended to use ultrasonic cleaners and steam baths designed for jewelry. They are not safe for use with larimar as they may damage the stone.
