Larimar is a volcanic gemstone only found in the Dominican Republic. The result of the volcanic activity which occurred millions of years ago was only rediscovered in 1974. It is an extremely rare form of pectolite. Pectolite is usually a white/greyish mineral. Larimar has a unique volcanic blue coloration. This is because in larimar the calcium has been substituted with copper. It is formed in the Miocene volcanic rocks and basalt which grew within the limestone on the south coast of the Dominican Republic.
The most commonly found color of larimar is sky blue which reflects its tropical location, but it is also found in varying hues of blues and whites. It is also known as Stefilia’s Stone and Atlatis Stone. Natives originally believed that the gem came out of the sea but when it was rediscovered in 1974 it was renamed larimar in honor of Larissa, the daughter of Miquel Méndez who discovered it.
Larimar gemstones range in color from dark blue and translucent to stones the color of the bluest sky. Some also contain cloud-like patterns which only add to their appeal. Larimar is only found in a specific mine in the Dominican Republic and so is highly prized and considered to be a rare gem.
Because larimar was formed over hundreds if not thousands of years the stones are highly polished naturally. This gives them an ethereal quality.
When formed into earrings, the unique patterning of larimar means that they make eye-catching earrings. As the earrings move different colors and patterns appear.
All genuine stones are opaque and can appear to be cloudy. Also purchase your jewelry from a master craftsman to make sure you are receiving the genuine article. If you have any doubts at all hold the larimar stone up to the light. Natural light is best. If you can see light through the stone, it means that the stone is fake.
Larimar has been attributed with many spiritual qualities. It is said to enlighten and heal in an emotional, mental, physical and spiritual way radiating healing and love.
Because larimar's origins are volcanic it is very durable and needs little specialized care. However, always be careful not to expose it to perfumes, hand cream, deodorant or household chemicals such as washing up liquid. These can all damage the stone. It is also sensitive to extreme heat and sunlight, so it is not advisable to wear your larimar earrings in hot weather.
